When Independent Lens debuted on the PBS national primetime schedule in January 2002, American television did not have a single program that showcased the entire panoply of independent film: fiction, documentary, biography, animation, short subjects—in other words, independent celluloid expression in all its forms. The series, a collaboration between ITVS and PBS, is dedicated to one simple mission: letting filmmakers tell their stories, in all their diversity. Read More

More than 70 percent of ITVS programming features culturally diverse content, and almost half of all ITVS programs are produced by minority filmmakers, including new and emerging talents. The perception that public television isn’t open to younger filmmakers is getting a makeover as a new generation of filmmakers with fresh perspectives is being encouraged to bring their projects to PBS. * ITVS International: Unveiling the International Commissioning Process

Are there enough international perspectives on American television? That’s the question ITVS and a group of major foundations began to ask a few years ago. Their answer: the International Media Development Fund (IMDF), which brings programs to U.S. audiences through both an International Call and commissioned projects. Read More

Obesity has captured a flood of media attention in recent years. Independent game developer Ian Bogost takes on the topic with a project he hopes will bring the dialogue on America’s health crisis to a new level.
