In Memoriam: Larry Hall and Patrick Wickham

LARRY HALL
LARRY HALL
Larry Hall

ITVS is sad to report the loss of Larry Hall, who passed away on February 21 after living with lymphoma for two years. ITVS would not be here today without Larry’s efforts: Along with Larry Sapadin, Larry Daressa and Jeff Chester, Hall lobbied Congress and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for the creation of a public television service for independent producers, which was chartered in 1988.

As a media advocate, Hall continued to contribute toward supporting and enriching public television. “More than anyone else, ITVS owes its existence to Larry Hall,” says Daressa. “A tireless fighter for the underdog and free speech, his persistence and intuitive understanding of the Congressional process made possible the minor legislative miracle which is the ITVS.”

In addition to his work as a public media activist, Hall was a theoretical physicist and a nonmilitary researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He is survived by his ex-wife, Nancy Hall-Manning, and his sons, Dana, David, Ole and Quincy.

Patrick Wickham

PATRICK WICKHAM
It is with deep sadness that we grieve the loss of our extraordinary colleague Patrick Wickham, who passed away on February 17 after a six-month struggle with cancer. Wickham was ITVS’s director of Contract Policy and Digital Initiatives and former director of Production. He had been on staff at ITVS almost since the organization’s inception, joining shortly after it was founded in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1991.

Wickham’s contributions over the past 13 years were enormous. He had a special gift for making filmmakers feel—know—that they had someone in their corner, helping them to succeed. He was smart, fun, inspired, deeply committed and wise. He gave tirelessly to ITVS and was an integral part of this organization’s success. He was a guiding force at ITVS—his legacy is evident in the nearly 400 independently produced programs in which he played a part. More than anything, we will remember his keen intelligence and his tremendous wit.

Wickham is survived by his wife, Kristi Highum, and his mother and grandmother. Condolences can be sent to KristiHighum@yahoo.com. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kids in Development Society, at 415-885-0660, or to the Heifer Foundation, at 800-422-0474 or www.heifer.org. As of April 8, one heifer, a flock of chicks, a sheep, numerous ducks, rabbits, goslings and honeybees, and 15 goats have been given in Wickham’s memory.
